National Green Tribunal
The National Green Tribunal was established on October 18, 2010, under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010. Its purpose is to provide effective and speedy disposal of matters related to environmental protection and the preservation of forests, and to enforce any legal rights related to the environment, including natural resources, and to provide relief and compensation for damages to individuals and property, including cases related to accidental medical issues. It is a specialized body equipped with the necessary expertise to handle environmental disputes involving multidisciplinary issues. The tribunal will not be bound by the procedure prescribed under the Civil Procedure Code, 1908, but will be guided by the principles of natural justice.
The dedicated jurisdiction of the Tribunal in environmental matters will facilitate faster environmental justice and help reduce the burden of litigation in High Courts. The Tribunal is required to make and endeavor to dispose of applications or appeals within 6 months of their filing. Initially, it is proposed to establish the NGT at five locations, and to make itself more accessible, it will follow a circuit procedure. New Delhi will be the main seat of the Tribunal, with other seats in Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata, and Chennai.
